Greetings and Holykisses,Five Banty hens had been laying eggs in this olde watercan when this little Momma decided to get broody and take over the nest. -- Talk about a mountain of eggs beneath her! She sat on them faithfully for 21 days, keeping them warm and turning them as best as well; ...one little hen can turn a mountain. -- Two days ago, I started hearing some chirping! I tell ya; it was so hard not to peek!
Baby chicks can go 3 days without food and water so I knew they'd be okay waiting a little while before moving her to a separate pen and helping them out of the can. There was no way the babies could have gotten out on their own. -- So, I raked out the pen, and put down some fresh straw and then rigged up a heat lamp and a pan of chick starter and little waterers. I sure was happy I remembered my leather gloves because when I lifted Momma out of the can she did some serious terroristic threatening. I had to hold her with one hand and scoop out babies with the other. Then I made a nest; adding chicklets and the last of the eggs that hadn't hatched... and then turned Momma loose.
It wasn't long and she gathered them all up under her wings and sat back down. She still has a few eggs under her but some she's started pushing out of the way making more room for her babies. I wish I'd have remembered to count them. I think there is around 7-10. I'm guessing just the "top" of the mountain hatched.
