Livin and Learnin

Greetings and Holykisses !!

I've known Percy our guinea has a mean streak.
-- Okay ...that may be putting it mildly.
Percy is really the bully of the barnyard.
He's been known to chase puddleducks from one end of the yard to the other.
And he pecks really hard and can take an acre of hide off ya. I know first hand and it hurts really bad.

When we built the new coop and put everyone together; by the end of the day we knew Percy had to be kicked back out. He did nothing but chase, corner, peck and keep the whole henhouse in an uproar.

Percy is not the only problem. We also have too many roosters.
And romantic roosters will fight for their hens.
So we ended up having to boot a couple of those out as well.
So running free, are Percy and two roosters.
Alls they do is pace around the chicken coop all day wanting back inside. It's kinda sad really.
--It's all been risky too because they roost in the barn and any night a possum or raccoon could find them.

We have one empty pen that is mainly used for baby chicks when we have them. I usually leave the door to this pen opened, and the other night this black rooster was perched on a board inside of it. As I approached; Percy was in front of me and happened to walk in as well. So I closed the door thinking that at least for that night they'd both be safe from varmits. Ha!

The next morning, when I went to the barn to open that door and let them out; I discovered a gruesome sight. The rooster was on the board but in a frumpled heap with head down and just kinda hanging there. His whole back side was bloodied and most of his tail feathers gone. It was a pitiful sight. I reached down to pick him up thinking he was dead but he moved! I guess he had read what to do when your being mauled by a bear coz not being able to escape he put his head down and butt out. --And mauled by the guineabear he was! -- ya know; I've never tasted guinea before but I was so mad... I began thinkin of ways to prepare guinea noodle soup, or guinea pot pie. No; don't worry... we didn't really eat him. Not yet anyways. And the rooster as you can see is doing much better. He's a nervous wreck and has been keeping some distance from Percy. He now roosts on my possum belly cupboard at night. So much for putting jars and pretty things on that little shelf next to it because he staked his claim to that too. ;) His backside is healing pretty well, but he sure looks rough with his naked and scabby rump. Poor thing.
Here are some other pics of life on the farm today.
The hens in the coop are much happier having fewer roosters around and aren't having to run from Percy in this heat.

Mrs. Bluebird has another clutch of four eggs in Mommas mailbox. :) I can hardly get over that. Our Momma had four kids too!

The donkeys and Popcorn the cow are spoiled and come to the fence when they see me at the garden hoping I'll hand feed them some corn on the cob. Spirit's nose is so velvety soft right now. Is it just me, or don't donkeys just have the most beautiful muzzles?!!
Last I leave you with a verse from the book of James.
"And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the FRIEND of GOD."

Have a wonderful weekend FRIEND!

Oh my Lea,

Linda at Prairie Flower Farm had a Mr. Not so Nice Guinea, too. I wonder if they came from the same family? Oh Percy needs to go to charm school :) :) I'm glad that the hens are doing better and that one rooster will recover :) :) :)

Thanks for the awesome Scripture from James. I've always liked the book of James because it gets right to the point :) :)

Have a great weekend. Love and hugs from Oregon, Heatehr :) :) :)

Percy needs a tribe! Guinea's do better when there is more than one, and we never cooped ours up, they love to roam free and will perch in trees at night! They are great to have around, they eat all the bug esp. ticks and chiggers plus they will keep snakes a bay! Just get Percy some buddies and he should be just fine!

I enjoy stopping by your cozy little blog and seeing what is new on the farm. Lots of pretty photos and wow, you found some great vintage finds. Just a little 'negative' observation though, I find your font difficult to read. I understand that you like it because it is like cursive handwriting which gives it a homey, personal touch, but just plain old 'printing' would be easier on my eyes!

Thanks yall! Yeah Heidi it seems there is always something going on at the barn. lol Sue, I think you're right and Percy would be a happier camper with others of his kind. Thing is they just get killed by possums etc when we let them run loose. Don't know what to do with the goofball. lol Maybe I should send him to Trace in a flat rate box? ;)
