Down On The Farm

Don't you just want to kiss this sweet velvety nose?
This is "Spirit," one of our donkeys. He knows I always have range cakes in my pocket and likes to get up close n personal.

We had to separate the donkeys from the cows this weekend so the donkeys are now incarcerated in the goatpen with Lydia. Spirit had to be ornery and chase Lydia a few rounds but he eventually tired out. They normally run with the cows but we're getting ready to wean calves and the donkeys upset the whole applecart when we try to capture and sort cows.
Today, Myguy welded one more bar across the bottom of the corral. Otherwise, it seems like we always get one Houdini who thinks to go "under."
This week, we'll keep feeding the cows in the corral to get the calves used to going inside. We actually started yesterday and two of the calves still haven't figured it all out. We have one bullcalf that is sucking two Momma's. The one that is not his Momma, is really getting pulled down, because she has two calves nursing, and is already bred back. We'll be glad to get everyone re-situated this week, and hopefully she'll start picking up weight again.
I went inside thee olde potting shed today. Can you believe it's January 2nd and the ivy is still going crazy and growing all over thee "inside?"
This is our pond, and I see one cow down there getting a drink. The puddleducks never did venture down to this body of water.....
Instead; they'd rather do cannonballs into the goldfish pond behind the house. They've totally taken it over. All the koi died, and I thought the goldfish too, but every now and then I see about 3 goldfish come up for air. We had to take the pump out... I mean... it was pointless with 4 puddleducks keeping it filthy.
But they still make me smile.

It is fun tending to animals...I don't know anything about calves until you tell me though!

Have you gotten Toby's new cd? This City on our Knees song is the only one I've heard on the radio...I keep meaning to get the cd and see what surprises there are! Toby never disappoints!
